There are a lot of nuts out there !

There’s a lot of activity outside our home by the pack of squirrels that hang out in our neighborhood. Racing around the yard and up and down the trees, they prepare for the advance of winter.  They forage for acorns mostly in order to survive the blustery days ahead.  God has put in them the instinct of preparation so that they may weather the harsh weather to come !

What about you?   Is saving a priority and planning important?  Solomon issued many verses in the Proverbs dealing with such matters. For instance, “The Lord will not suffer the soul of the righteous to famish; but He casteth away the substance of the wicked.” (10:3).  Doing right insures God’s provision !  Disobedience cannot always make that claim (though God may graciously provide even for the wayward, it’s not the “lock” it is for the person committed to doing right).   Or, “He that gathereth in summer is a wise son; but he that sleepeth in the harvest is a son that causeth shame.” (10:5).    It is the diligent planner and worker who God approves of not the lazy excuser  !

Each tick of the clock we get closer to some great calamity like a natural disaster, financial collapse, retirement, a physical problem that may prevent us from making the income we have or sap not only our vitality and health but our wealth, so it’s good to have saved up some acorns for such a day. Joseph understood the value (by God’s revealing it to him) of saving for the rainy day or years !  And he was ready and helped save a nation. Having the discipline to say no to an impulse to spend foolishly (note foolishly is the operative word, for some spending on things you want can actually be a good thing for one’s morale as long as wisdom tempers your decisions).  Having some extra food, supplies, adequate insurance, and a savings is important too.

However each tick of the clock also means we get closer to eternity.  So first, make sure you have accepted Jesus Christ as your personal Savior. Have you asked Him to forgive you for being a sinner and asked Him to be your Savior yet?  If so, are you spiritual affairs in order? Are you pretty much ready to meet Him at the Judgment Seat of Christ mentioned in 2 Cor.5:10 ? “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that everyone may receive the things done in his body, according that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.”    Not an evaluation of if you are saved or not, not a consignment to heaven or hell, but an assessment of what you did after you were saved and based on that, a loss or gaining of rewards which is why John wrote “Look to yourselves, that we lose not those things which we have wrought, but that we receive a full reward.” (2 Jn.8).    So living FOR Christ and BY His strength today in preparation of eternity is something that must be focused on at all times to be prepared well for our date with eternity and this heavenly exam !  But don’t look at this rendezvous with your destiny as a negative, look at it in light of today as a real positive – there are a LOT of nuts out there in this world  – to gather, that is – HA.  Go gather them today and store up treasures in heaven !!
