The past week I’ve witnessed a strange phenomena. A couple of robins have been sitting on our window sills and flying towards the top of the window and then into it as if they are trying somehow to get in ! So every so often I hear this “bam” against the window. Our cat loves it but wants at the birds !! Some “experts” think that the birds are hormonally charged now and acting odd seeing their reflections and want at that “other bird”. In Bible college some of us used to jokingly mock the philosophy of the day and say “Let your glands be your guide” ! Strange how that seems to have survived the turbulent 70’s in similar fashion but also in subtle ways!
When Solomon wrote that famous passage in Proverbs 3:5-6 “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not unto thine own understanding, in all thy ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct thy paths.” he knew much about glandular direction having hundreds of wives and concubines as well as great wealth and position in the world. Yet he came to the realization that going by one’s “gut” or making decisions based on feelings was like slamming yourself in futile ways against a window. You really get no where and you get your “beak” hurt in the process !
What’s on your plate this week? Attack it with zeal for the Lord ! Make those hundreds of decisions based on what He has taught in His Word. Don’t let your sinful nature lead you to choose what’s easy over what’s right, that’s a losing proposition as good as it may look initially. You settle for lower character and “smoother” sailing but you don’t allow Him to hone your character. What Solomon actually penned in these verses states that when we truly trust the Lord He makes our paths truly smooth ! So don’t be fooled by what looks good when its not real and not right, you’re only flying into a cheap reflection !!
