GREAT Light

As the news of Hurricane Sandy was being forecast I recall one thing I did was made sure all our flashlights, lamps, and candles were ready to go. Lots of batteries, plenty of lamp oil and matches so we could see should we be in extended periods of dark.  It’s amazing how we take light we get from electricity for granted, isn’t it?  Recently I heard about this guy claiming he’d been to heaven for a few days but came out his coma and back to this life.  He claims he has proof as to what it is like and answers to theological questions people have about the afterlife. The answers to two questions revealed something interesting. He was asked by a woman if an atheist relative of hers would be in heaven. His response was “yes, as God wants all people to enjoy eternity.”   The other questioner asked if there was a hell. The man emphatically said “No !”.    If you are a Christian who has learned much of the Bible and have a faith in what God has said, you will be struck by this man’s claims as very much in conflict with what the Lord has told us about these matters.  Isaiah’s test found in 8:20 reads: “To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this Word, it is because there is NO LIGHT in them !”

Sadly, many will be duped into believing this man has actually died and went to heaven for a week and come back with concrete evidence but on the plus side, aren’t you thankful you don’t have to take a man’s word for things?  Either he is lying or God’s Word is —  I’m going with God !! I am grateful God has shown to us what we need to know now and the rest if he so chooses will be divulged to us later but in the meantime we look through the pages of Scripture to discern all things.    Dr. Van, one of my seminary profs, often quoted this to us: “The secret things belong unto the Lord our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us, and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this Law.” (Dt.29:29).   You have all the light you need for whatever storm comes your way, friend.  It is  as David penned so many years ago, “Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” (Ps.119:105).  When the decisions come, the claims pop up, the trials ensue remember God has given you  GREAT light!!
