The Noise that Soothes

Usually I’ve been writing these blogs earlier in the morning and today as I write there’s a sound outside you dont usually hear very early, and usually you hear this sound in the summer. The sound I’m talking about is that buzzing insect sound on those hotter summer days. Know what I mean?   If you take a moment to listen, I’m sure you could describe all kinds of sound around you even now.

Paul wrote, “There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and none of them is without signification”  (1Cor.14:10). Every day there are a myriad of sounds we take in, some pleasant, some annoying, some confusing, some very clear.  But of all the things we hear we must make certain we are listening carefully to the voice of God !

The ancient Jews reminded their children every day of this as at a young age they recited daily the “Shema” (from the Hebrew meaning to “hear or heed”) from Dt.6:4-6, “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord: and thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.  And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart.”     The vital importance of hearing and heeding what God has said was drilled into their hearts and minds routinely knowing that we are sinners are so prone to stray from truth and listen to other voices, primarily our own inclinations over His.

So, when it comes to a decision, make sure you are listening to what God’s Word has said. The principles for any decision you need to make are written down for you, well in advance !  Reject the impluses of your heart that conflict with these principles remembering what He’s said, “There is a way which seems right to a man but the end thereof are the ways of death” (Prov.14:12)  &  “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct thy paths.” (Prov.3:5,6).   The word from God is YOU and I cannot totally be trusted since we are sinners to start with and we need the trusted and TRUE voice of God over that of fallible man.    When you start to feel afraid, lonely, or discouraged pick up the Word and take a little time to LISTEN to His soothing voice bring you back to a place of peace.
