Witnessing a birth !

Last evening I was  much encouraged. I went to a couple’s house for a Bible study and the husband was saved recently but the wife still was not. We covered the first lesson in a new convert study our church has and I was amazed that though the lesson dealt with salvation and they both had worked through this lesson prior to my coming the wife still was not born again !  Oh she thought she was, but despite tremendous verses and completing the lesson before hand something still obviously was not clicking for her.

The deal in these discipleship lessons is the person or persons is to work through a lesson and then someone from our church goes over it making sure they understand and such.   So I paused several times as I covered each section to relate to her this critical subject (salvation) and hone in on exactly what was the sticking point in her accepting the Lord.  Poking and probing her heart and throwing at her several verses to move her to make a genuine decision I sat back and watched the Holy Spirit do His great work with her and all of a sudden she did something in all my years of leading people to Christ I can’t recall anyone has done.  Instead of me seeing her ready to pray and her asking for help through it, she just broke out in a simple yet effective salvation prayer to God !   She just talked to him and asked His forgiveness for her sin and to be her Savior !  It was a truly sweet moment to witness from a sweet lady connecting with a sweet Savior !!

Paul wrote to the Roman believers, “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” (10:13).   In context we find the request is dealing with a person converting to Christ and so this petition most definitely means for the one calling to be saved God will certainly honor said request  if it is sincere and understanding of the gospel.    What a promise though we have had delivered to us at our conversion and what an encouragement to see a new birth before one’s very eyes !!  Growing up on  a farm I have witnessed all manner of farm animals being born (cats, dogs, cows, pigs, chickens, even horses) but to see a soul born again is a boost to one’s soul that cannot be surpassed for it is a special work of God.   So, why not ask God to be in on a new birth soon?   A saved person needn’t be a pastor or a missionary to do this, just be a witness for Him !!

Word of God or words of men?

Our church is reading through a very special psalm this week, the 119th.  It is at the heart of our Bible and is the heart for it speaks of the Word in great detail. If you carefully read it as we are this week and meditate upon it asking God to show you nuggets and applications it is amazing what the Holy Spirit shows.   As I began to read it prayerfully and mused upon it I was struck by a particular verse in the “Gimel” section.   The psalm is laid out in twenty two sections each corresponding to the twenty two letters of the Hebrew alphabet and so in the Gimel part of the psalm each verse there begins with the letter Gimel (comparable to our letter G).

But here’s the final two verses in that part of the psalm: “Princes also did sit and speak against me; but thy servant did meditate in Thy statutes. Thy testimonies also are my delight and my counselors.” (vss.23-24).   Note how the writer mentions something we all go through: opposition from others. Whether it be slander, gossip, mean spirited comments, judgmental remarks.  We all experience some or all of these at one time or another and our normal response is to retaliate in some way.  It may be to verbally assault them, speak to others about them in derogatory or unkind ways or to hold it in and simmer in bitterness.  Not this writer of Scripture, he knew better !   He said his reaction would be a spiritual one, he would not lower himself to sinful retorts but rather “meditate in Thy statutes.”      How soothing, how spiritual, how right he was and how right we too must be.  Resist the sinful urges when you are flattened verbally and focus on what God’s Word says for it will keep you on a right heading !

The Psalmist here reiterated he would not dwell on the sinful onslaughts of others but delight in “Thy testimonies”.   When we’re attacked so it is so  easy to mull over in your mind repeatedly what was said that hurt you and for some folks they live years bombarded by hurtful comments that foster great insecurity and pain.  Why not take a cue from this psalm and let you mind dwell upon not words of sinful men but a holy God Who loves you greatly?!

Relief from the heat

Well, it’s July again and with it warm temperatures, and around here of late, very warm !   It sure makes you appreciate the blessing of air conditioning, ice tea, and a nice shady tree !   I do not know how people in the deep south survive quite frankly.  But  I am reminded as a believer in Christ of the passage in Luke 16 of a man who had no such relief and so these hot temps encourage me to be better at evangelism !   Read what Jesus told us of the man who was in hell, “And he cried and said ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.’ (vs24).

What we tend to forget through the hustle and bustle of life is that this is a very real happening with many who have already ended up in hell and will be for many headed there.  We get spiritually lethargic and maybe even stick our heads in the proverbial sand about the plight of souls around us. Do you know someone who is unsaved as yet? I’m sure you do, perhaps a coworker, neighbor or even relative.  Odds are there is even someone in your own church who professes to be saved but they truly aren’t for they have prayed the ‘sinners prayer’ without the proper understanding or sincerity needful for a genuine conversion.  They did so to “fit in” but manifest not the signs of a true believer.

Some years back I recall speaking with a teen about her soul. She was cold as ice spiritually despite having attended a wonderful church and Christian school.  I wondered if she were really born again and asked her as tactfully and concerned as I could. Her response confirmed to me she was not but it was years later she came back to me saying our conversation that day was the impetus that the Lord used to bring her to true salvation !   Time is fleeting, life is short and we never know when someone we know or love will be gone, so why not commit yourself today while its hot to the same reminder of being a better evangelist.  Grab some tracts at church to start the conversation rolling and give someone one, share how you were saved to another who is unsure of their eternal destiny but be committed to giving out the greatest message there is in the gospel of Jesus Christ.     In so doing you make the world a much better place, you give a soul relief from eternal heat to come !!

A little lesson on baptism

It’s always so refreshing when our church conducts a baptismal service for God has worked in hearts so that people want to do what He commands and so next week we will have another baptismal service.  One of the people being baptized was saved through our ministry not that long ago. She is eighty-six but she will not allow her age to stop her from being baptized !  Praise the Lord !!

We, of course, do not see this ordinance of the church as necessary for salvation (the thief on the cross was promised heaven by Jesus Himself and had no opportunity while nailed to his cross to be baptized), however it is so for sanctification or spiritual growth. Broken down very simply, whenever we are made aware that God requires something of us and we balk to do it, we stunt our own progress spiritually. But when we comply, we allow Him to do His bidding in our life and so baptism is a great opportunity for any new believer to start on the pathway of growth. We chuck any excuses and we just simply do as He asks.

I suppose the very first converts in the church age as seen in Acts 2 upon hearing Peter’s marvelous sermon thrilled the early church as they went forward in believer’s baptism then.  Luke writes, “. . .’Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remissions of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.” (vs.38).   His primary focus was that his hearers be saved hence the word “repent” and lest we misunderstand the admonition to be baptized  he uses a preposition in the Greek which is to be translated here “on the basis of”.   In effect, Peter was preaching that they could only be baptized when a true conversion had happened to them individually and on this basis then they could be properly immersed (baptized here means immersed).   But imagine those first baptisms !!  The excitement of people not only being born again but deciding that they wanted to GROW too !!    How about you?    What growth have you seen lately?  Is there something you have delayed to do for the Lord?   Has life gotten so hectic that He’s been crowded out and the basics have slipped?   Take a cue from some new converts, just follow the Lord’s Word and it won’t be long before the spiritual exuberance returns !   Perhaps you’re doing fine, oh you have your ups and downs but all in all you’d honestly say growth is occurring.  Why not encourage someone in a humble way to join along in the spiritual journey of Christian growth too !!

Storms and our Savior

Major storms have been coming through the midsection of the nation and now they are here bringing thunder, lightning and a good bit of rain.  Though we don’t often like the storms and the “disruptions” we feel they can cause to our lives, God knows what He is doing!  He knows the water we need, the nutrients required for the ground, the purging of the landscape, etc.  He maintains and cares for His creation with meticulous action and yet you are even more important to Him !  Jesus said, “But the very hairs of your head are numbered. Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows.” (Mt.10:30-31).

The storms will come and go and God will use them to do what’s needed to develop and care for you as His child, a person of intense value to Him ! So don’t fret, lose heart or fear the worst, expect God’s best as you go through these times knowing He knows what He’s doing ! Seek His strength to ride out the storm and follow His Word through it and He will bring you out even better when its subsided.  Ahh, when the rainstorm is over there is a freshness in the air, a relief, and a great calm.   Whatever today may bring your way, storm or sunny day, remember He is in complete control and values you greatly !!

What is YOUR life?

The half-brother of our Lord, James, wrote this:  “Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life?  It is even a vapor, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.” (James 4:14).   Like much of his book,  this man of God put down a pithy and succinct statement of fact for us to ponder with great care.  And there are many ramifications to consider.

Jim started coming to our church not long ago, he’d moved here recently to a retirement community and we’d gotten to know him through leading a friend of his to Christ.  He was a kind, sweet man in his late 80’s and he said to this friend, “We need to start going to Pastor Reese’s church !” So they did and one of his last words to me were these:  “Do you know why I like coming here to your church? Because you preach the gospel here !”   Jim had gotten saved not long ago himself in another church and been baptized in his late 80’s but moved here and knew instinctively that finding a church of like precious faith was vital.  Many octogenarians would simply “sit on their can” and whine about their aches and pains but not Jim, he wanted to be in God’s house.   And for Jim, it didn’t matter what the church didn’t have, as many in today’s entitlement generation would focus on, it mattered what it stood for !  Jim had planned to join the church soon and see his friend baptized and join, but the Lord had other plans.    Jim, or James, slipped off into eternity yesterday and now he’s really living !!!

What is YOUR life, friend?  Jesus’ brother “Jim” said its like a wisp of smoke, a mere vapor in comparison to eternity.  We’re here today, but perhaps gone tomorrow?   So live it well dear reader.   Let go of those grudges, leave off sin and put on what is right, focus on those things which truly matter and do right by your fellow man as you would have them do to you and above all glorify God with the life He gave you, for soon, very soon, it will be over here and we too will cross the other side with Jim !!

The Adventure awaiting you today in the Bible !!

If you have been saved you likely know how God uses His Word to really speak to you.  Any believer who has been in a church where he has been taught properly knows that one must approach the Word cleanly so that the Spirit of God may speak clearly.   So to that end, before we get ready its good to have a little chat about your soul and clear out any clutter or sin that may deter God’s Word from really speaking to you.  But it is also so gracious of our God and Heavenly Father to know that in our darkest hours He stands willing to communicate to you just what you need for that hour.  What a comfort the psalms have been to both my wife and I just this week.   How utterly astounding it must be then to the angels when they see us “skipping” out on reading the Bible !!

My first summer as a pastor, I served as a youth pastor in my hometown and I was, needless to say, a bit anxious about it all so in my very first day the Lord gave me exactly what I needed from Joshua chapter 1.  That seasoned general was very concerned about his role as the new leader of Israel now that Moses had left for heaven and so the Lord tenderly encouraged Joshua thus: “There shall not any man be able to stand before thee all the days of thy life; as I was with Moses, so will I be with thee; I will not fail thee nor forsake thee.  Be strong and of a good courage. . . ”  (1:5-6).  I sure needed that challenge then and maybe today you need the same.  But if it’s not some worry or fear you face it is something else in this pilgrimage here we call our life.  And the amazing thing is the Lord has the remedy already in print, you just need to read it carefully and consecratedly !!

Look for the rainbow

Last night as my wife and I headed out to prayer meeting she spotted a rainbow ahead of us and then behind us I noticed very dark storm filled clouds.  We were ahead of the storm but it was going to catch up, and it sure did.  Yet there was the rainbow, God’s promise originally to Noah, before us !!

How emblematic of how life can be here many times when you think about it.  The storms of life swirl about us and yet through them all is God’s promise that things will be just fine as we serve Him !!   The Lord says in Genesis 9:13, “I do set My bow in the cloud, and it shall be a token of a covenant between Me and the earth (us)”.  He goes on to see of the rainbow, “And I will remember My covenant, which is between Me and you. . . and the waters shall no more become a flood to destroy all flesh.” (vs.15).      Had Noah and his family not had that pact from God nor the visual reminder of the rainbow imagine the anxiety, imagine the “what if’s” about the Lord and how living for God could’ve easily degenerated into how the cults exert their influences on their followers today (serving their gods in undue fear).

Thankfully, we serve a God Who thinks of everything and consoles us that though storms persist in this old fallen world that with Him there is the rainbow !  There is hope just up ahead, there will be no more storms with Him one day.  The sin nature will be eradicated, the curse lifted, the lethal temptations of the fallen nature will be in the past !!  So, the next time you see a storm brewing in your life look for the rainbow, its really not that far ahead !!

Using the whole “plant” for the glory of God

A few years back I bought a rhubarb plant from an Amish man in the area. He told me to put it in and not harvest it the first year and let it get established.  I like the tart taste of the plant. As a boy we had some on our farm and we would eat it raw and Mom made a sauce out of it and sometimes even a cobbler or pie with strawberries !      But I learned something else about the plant recently that fits my spiritual lesson today.  The leaves are poisonous (which I have known for years) but God made even them to serve us in an interesting way.  The leaves have high amounts of oxalic acid and so can be used to make a natural pesticide !     A person can boil these leaves in water and make their own pesticide which SHOULD NOT be placed on anything one wants to eat for it can cause even death !!  But your roses and other plants can be sprayed to deter any bugs which would attack the plant and you save money and help the environment by not having to buy or use chemical products.

Whether or not the poison in the plant was a result of the fall of man when God cursed the ground or not the point is that all around us in God’s creation now are things which are good for us and things which are also deadly.  There are things that bring us joy and sorrow and yet God is wondrously able to work through them all for us on our behalf to work about His grand plan and provide with whatever we need to do His will. Peter wrote, “According as His Divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him that hath called us to glory and virtue.” (2Pt.1:3).

God has called each of us to “glory and virtue” !  Its is your explicit mandate from Him today to choose so that He is glorified in your decisions and that His communicable attributes shine in you.  Such as the fruit of the Spirit (love, joy, peace, etc.).  There will be poisonous ideas and options out there to thwart God’s purposes for you but even those if we choose well God is able to turn the poison into pesticide !!  Take that bitter thought that would shackle you and forgive,  overcome that evil with good, turn that temptation into triumph by His grace and power because all things really can work together for good to them that love God and that are called according to His purpose !!!!  Use the whole “plant” in your life today for the glory of God.

Tweaking your faith

Not long ago I was getting out the bicycle for a little work out and I noticed the back tire looked pretty soft. So, I took out the air pump and put some air back into it and it was good to go.  It’s not very long before the ladies start noticing the floors need swept (we men are a little more oblivious to that !) or guys see that lawn needs cutting again, or the car could stand a tuneup.  What I’m saying is, no matter how far along we move in the Christian life,  just like these physical things need tweaking, so does our faith.

Solomon wrote this, “The fear of man brings a snare: but whoso putteth his trust in the Lord is safe.” (Prov.29:25).  The Hebrew word for safe has the idea of being put up high out of harm’s way !   But here’s where the tweaking comes in for us many times.  Because we see, work, and live around people it’s easy to focus on them and what they expect of us, we can fear their rejection, live mainly for their approval, etc.  Yet over and over again we’re reminded in the Scriptures that God is to be our trust.  “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart. . . ” (Prov.3:5); “Trust in the Lord, and do good, so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed.” (Ps.37:3); “Some trust in chariots and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the Lord our God.” (Ps.20:7); etc., etc., etc. !!

With some of us, we clamor so after man’s approval from others because a parent or some other authority in our past never seemed to approve of us. The bar was set so high by them we couldn’t possibly meet it, or they wrestled with their own sin issues and the love simply wasn’t there for us, so we seek out the commendations of others and before you know it you are not trusting in God and His definite acceptance of you as His child !  Or you work hard only to be dissed in some way by envious people and you want to just throw in the towel. Or you try harder to please others and you get slammed before long by people and your focus is on them not Him.   Weariness, discouragement, even depression sets in and your spiritual tires are flat.   You need some air, friend !!  The bottom line is, why focus on what imperfect man thinks or does when the One Who made us all accepts YOU in the beloved (Jesus) !!!!!   He will make things alright, He will never let you down and those times you think He may be, He is actually trying to lift you higher, you simply need to focus on Him and TRUST.

So, do your best FOR God, not others. Don’t worry about what man thinks, don’t let their sin take you down also and remember God is the One with Whom we ALL have to do. If people give you grief He will handle them, but you keep trusting God by doing what He wants and knowing there is therefore NO condemnation from Him about you (Rom.8:1).  Today, stay focused on Him and no matter what you have to do, do it FOR Him !!!  When thoughts of others attempt to drag you down, think on Him and how much He truly loves you !!!
