Wise up about time

So how was your weekend? I hope it was a good one. It’s always good to spend time with family and friends then. For us it was a pretty packed weekend but fulfilling and being with our friends at church is encouraging.  I don’t want to bore you about all I did but I want you to think about what you did the past couple of days because one the most precious commodities God gives us all is time. And like everything else He entrusts us with we are to be good stewards of it for Him.

Remember Jesus’ parable in Matthew 25 where He spoke of a man doling out talents to his servants?  “And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one: to every man according to his several ability and straightway took his journey.” (vs.15).   If you recall the story the master expected that what he had given would not be wasted but instead wisely invested. So it is with time.  We all get varying amounts, some of us live long lives some of us won’t but we all came through the weekend if you’re reading this, ha !  I hope you decided to take some needed R&R from the grind of the past week, chose to spend time with family, opted to attend church, contributed in some way at your church that made a difference for the Lord’s work.

One of the things we need to be careful about though is wasting time on too much leisure or working so hard we neglect needed rest or time with family.  It’s a constant struggle to be balanced, isn’t it?  The other day I was talking to a couple of our neighbors and naturally weather invariably comes up in most conversations and as we spoke of all the rain we’d had he asked if we had a rain guage. Nope, hasn’t been high on my list of toys, I admitted.  But do you take note periodically of how you spend time? Its part of life that God has given to you and using it wisely for Him will make a difference not just in your life but those around you.

I will bore you with one thing we did over the weekend – we took our grandson to his first high school football game. He asked question after question after question – twenty years ago I might have said, “Ty, can you turn off the question meter for  juuust a little bit?”  But God took time to work on me.  After SEVERAL queries as to what the players and refs were doing finally an older man turned around and said “Sounds like you need to get that young man a book on football for this Christmas !”  I joked back, that he was right and did he want Ty for the next quarter ! Later the man told my wife most people wouldn’t have been so patient with a highly inquisitive kid.   Only answer – God has been patient with us and helped us!  But you know what, sometimes you never get those times and teachable moments back so we go for it.

So today and this week God may gave you more time. Most of it will probably be spent wisely by you doing the same old same old but through it all, if you’re allowing God to use time wisely in your life, He is molding you through even time. And you will be investing it not just in time but in eternity where we’ll hear HIM say to US, “Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy Lord.” (vs.23) !!
